There are several warning signs that indicate you should have your brakes inspected and possibly repaired. If you have experienced any of the following then it’s time to bring your vehicle in.
  • Your anti-lock brake system (ABS) warning light is lit. Generally it’s an amber warning light.
  • The brake light on your dashboard is red. This indicates that there’s some type of system imbalance. It should be checked out right away.
  • When you brake, your pedal feels spongy or it’s slow to respond.
  • You hear any unusual sounds when you brake, including grinding or squealing. Sometimes these sounds will be constant and in other cases they’ll happen occasionally. Either way, it’s time to bring your vehicle in.
  • If your vehicle pulls to one side when you’re driving, then your alignment and brakes should be checked.
These are only some of the signs of brake problems. If you’ve noticed these or other issues with you brakes then it’s time to have them checked. At DN Automotive we’ll give your vehicle a brake inspection and explain exactly what’s required. The owner’s manual of your vehicle should specify how often you need to have your brakes checked and serviced. If you can’t find the information, let us know and we can look it up for you. Generally pads and brake fluid should be inspected about every 12,000 miles. The recommendation of many manufacturers is to replace them if they have less than 1/8 inch of pad lining. It’s also generally recommended to replace them altogether every 25,000 miles. Your brake fluid should be checked from time to time. Ask your service technician to check it every time you have your oil changed. Dirty brake fluid should be replaced, and a general rule of thumb is to replace brake fluid every 20,000 to 25,000 miles. However, the right schedule for your vehicle will depend on its make and model, as well as your particular style of driving.
